Since the reform and opening-up,China is enjoying an improved international status and influence day by day with its rapid economic development and increasing comprehensive national strength. However, its good prospect of development has disturbed some ill-disposed western countries. As a consequence, they attempt to demonize and destroy China's peaceful development by means of spreading rumor such as “Power Leading to Hegemony”,“China Threat” that are to the disadvantage of its development, which has resulted in misunderstanding to a certain part of people, especially those abroad,to some extent. Therefore, the central government of China has intensified its foreign publicity of political texts, aiming to build the good image of China to the international community by letting them know the real China.Political texts are the best media to publicize Chinese national fundamental policies, economics, national defense, diplomacy, etc. Thus as the bridge to demonstrate China's development all around and deliver its idea of peaceful development so as to build a good image to the world, the translation of Chinese political texts has direct influence on the effectiveness of foreign publicity.Xi Jinping: the Governance of China,as a distinguished representative of Chinese political texts, has made a response to a series of significant theoretical and practical issues concerning the party and the country under the new era background, which intensively embodies governing philosophy and strategy of the central leadership of CPC(hereinafter abbreviated as XJPGC).But studies on Chinese political texts have been focusing on pure linguistic level while those focusing on extra-linguistic level are not common. Therefore, the thesis intends to take the English version of XJPGC as research object based on the three manipulative factors put forward by Andre Lefevere,i.e.ideology,poetics,patronage,and probes into how the three extra-linguistic factors regulate and manipulate the production of translated text in the process of translation. The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction towards the background, purposes, significance, methodology and the structure of the study.Chapter Two presents the literature review, which offers an overview of the previous studies on translation of Chinese political texts from various theoretical perspectives as well as previous studies on manipulation theory..Chapter Three is the theoretical framework. At first,it gives a general introduction of the development of Cultural Turn. And then it also introduces the related background knowledge,i.e.rewriting,an important term in study about manipulation theory. And then the thesis discusses the three factors of manipulation theory, namely, ideology, patronage, poetics. Finally it probes into the interaction between the triad factors of manipulation theory.Chapter Four takes up the major part of the thesis. It analyses the English translation of XJPGC from the perspective of manipulative factors of manipulation theory: ideology, patronage and poetics, and probes into how the triad factors manipulate the translation of XJPGC.It firstly analyzes the ideological manipulation on translation purpose, translators' expertise and requirement and translation principle respectively. And then it expounds on the manipulation from government-patron and institution-patrons on initiating translation, selecting translators, organizing translation and extending publication in detail, and it also discusses the relationship between government-patron and institution-patrons.Thirdly it explores target-oriented poetics manipulation on translation strategy at the lexical, syntactic and rhetorical level, and analyzes author-oriented poetics manipulation on translation strategy from retaining original rhetorical devices and original cultural information,in the hope to provide a reference for future study of Chinese political texts.Chapter Five concludes the major findings and limitation of the thesis.
