The thesis focuses on the study of Lin Shu's translation of Robinson Crusoe under the ideological manipulation. As Lefevere pointed out in Translation,Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Fame, ideology is the determining factor which affects the image of translated works. The ideology here refers to the translator's ideology and the dominant ideology imposed by patrons. However, dominant ideological manipulation on translation works attracts most attention of scholars while the translator's personal ideology is often neglected in the analysis of a translation work from the perspective of ideological manipulation. In the passage, the confrontation between the mainstream ideology and the translator's personal ideology will be taken into account in the analysis of Lin Shu's translation of Robinson Crusoe.Three possible outcomes of the confrontation will be analyzed through examples from Lin Shu,s version:the translator agrees with the social ideology and accepts their position in the society which can be seen in Lin Shu's rewriting of the source text under the mainstream ideological manipulation;the translator's individual ideology refuses or opposes the mainstream ideology apparently but accepts it unconsciously for its strong power which is shown in Lin Shu's rewriting of the source text under his contradictory ideology;the mainstream ideology is replaced by different kinds of personal ideologies which are based on the reflections and criticism of the mainstream ideology. Moreover,Lin Shu's ideological preference, personal attitude towards religion, moral principles and science influence his translation, too. The dominant ideology as well as the translator's ideology in Lin Shu,s time may be misleading, but as time goes on,scientific ideology will exert its influence in the translation process. Therefore, translation works are back to their original and basic purpose, reproducing the equivalent of the source language.
