On The Manipulation Of Ideology In Literary Translation

Robinson Crusoe, a classic story of a shipwrecked mariner on a deserted island written by the English writer Daniel Defoe, is one of the earliest and the most important novels in the history of English literature. It was a story about Robinson Crusoe who was shipwrecked and trapped in a deserted island in one of his navigations. Due to his amazing perseverance, he fought against and overcame all kinds of natural disasters and diseases when he met with difficulties and extremities. First published in 1719, Robinson Crusoe has been praised as one of the greatest English novels. Due to its absorbing stories and easy language, it has gained readers of generations. It has been translated into different languages and gained a worldwide reputation.According to Andre Lefevere's Rewriting Theory, translation is a form of rewriting to the original work. Rewriting is editing that involves writing something again to adapt to different intentions or occasions. Therefore, no mater what the translator's or client's intention is, translation reflects to some extents the manipulation of ideology in literature translation and gives service to a certain society. In his view, translations are not finished in a vacuum but in political, religious and cultural contexts and are manipulated by ideology at a given time.Based on the views of the manipulation school and ideas of the Rewriting Theory of AndréLefevere, one of the most important representatives of Translation Studies School, and by putting the great novel Robinson Crusoe under the background of macroscopic society and culture, this thesis compares and analyses comprehensively the whole translation process of Robinson Crusoe---from the choosing of original texts to reconstructing the target language, aiming to expound and prove the influence of ideology upon translation with concrete translation practice. Except introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, this thesis takes a brief look at the history and the whole translation situation of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Then in the following part, the thesis introduces AndréLefevere's Rewriting Theory, ideology and the relationship between ideology and translation in details. By comparing two Chinese translation versions of Robinson Crusoe, the third part tries to show the ideological manipulation upon translators' choosing of the original text, the understanding of the original text and reconstructing in target language. This part also tends to explore deeply the relationship between translation and ideology, aiming to prove the idea that there is invisible restriction of ideology through whole translation process.By comparing and analyzing its two Chinese translations, this thesis explores ideological influence and ideological manipulation upon the translation of Robinson Crusoe. This study shows that the translators'rewriting in their translations is affected by different political, religious and cultural ideologies. All the ideological factors manipulate the translation activity of the translators and lead to the rewriting of original works. It is of realistic significance to study the translation of Robinson Crusoe from the perspective of ideology on the basis of its previous research.
