A Preliminary Study On Jazz Fugue

As a new type of polyphonic music style in the 20th century,Jazz fugue is different from the tradition polyphonic music in musical style.Formerly polyphony was been created by the traditional composers in the west.In 20th century,the creation of polyphony is not any longer the exclusive of those old composer,many Jazz composers were also making innovations in this field and keep numerous excellent fugues of Jazz style.This article is based on four Fugue by Henry Matin,tried to find out how to combine the Jazz element with traditional Counterpoint,and make Counterpoint will have new unique glamour with more individualized.This article is consists of introduction,three chapters and conclusion.The first chapter is a detailed explanation of the Jazz theory in Jazz fugue creation;The second chapter give a comprehensive analysis of four Jazz fugue,and explore the music styles of jazz fugue;The third chapter summarizes the inheriting and innovating relationship between jazz fugue and traditional fugue,and the relationship between Martin fugue and Bach fugue.In Matin's four fugue,the composer had a powerful synthesis of counterpoint and Jazz elements by his rigorously conceptions with skilled counterpoint,make the divertimento have wonderfully American Jazz atmosphere.
