The ten sonatas composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(16 December 1770 – 26 March 1827)for violin and piano are some of the most significant and influential pieces in music history, and also some of the most frequently performed ever since. They play an important role between the classical and romantic eras of classical music in many ways, including transitioning between different form structure and composing styles and music conception.Especially the sonata for violin and piano no.9 “Kreutzer” which is often considered to be a milestone. In comparison to the other sonatas of similar periods created by Beethoven, the performer is required to be emotional and expressive in interpreting this masterpiece. There are three chapters.chapter one describes the study of the composing style.Chapter two discusses the interpretations of the piece, looking into the surrounding dynamics of historical and musical structure.Chapter three is the main focus of this study, describing the findings regarding the difficulties and key points through my own experience of practicing and performing. It is divided into the following three points: First, from the bowing and articulation point of view, there are methods for playing chords, playing as accompaniment parts, and playing methods for staccato.Second, from the point of view of the music, there are the time value of the punctuation and the time value of the rest.Third, from the viewpoint of dynamic performance, there are f>p and sfp,sf>p and fp,f-ff and sf,and pp-cresc.and p-cresc.In conclusion, this thesis is mainly a study and analysis of the musical structure and performance interpretation on the sonata for violin and piano no.9 “Kreutzer”,based on my personal practice over the years and after extensive studies of previously written analysis by both Chinese and worldwide authors. The thesis is an in depth meticulous three dimensional analysis and study, reaching into the backgrounds and the musical structure as well as the techniques used. This thesis is a demonstration and discussion of the conclusions and finding s of my personal studies into and performance of this masterpiece, and thus provide insight and guidance for future performers and hope to provide a valuable reference.
