In recent years, the importance of personality has begun to be recognized in the field of interpreting because it predicts and explains behavior although general cognitive ability and language proficiency are still irrefutably considered as the main factors influencing interpreting performance. In the past decades, research about the relationship between personality and language learning has developed very rapidly while research into the relationship between personality and interpreting performance is relatively few in number.According to previous research, personality trait as a stable factor can exert an influence on academic and occupational performance. In addition, personality has also been found to influence language learning. This study aims to explore the relationship between learners' personality traits and interpreting performance, with a particular focus on extraversion.Quantitative method was adopted in this study.41 first-year MTI(Master of Translation and Interpreting)students in Xiamen University participated in this empirical research. They took a consecutive interpreting test which included a Chinese to English text and an English to Chinese text and completed a personality questionnaire which measured their degree of extraversion.Correlational analyses were conducted through SPSS 22.0 between the participants' score on extraversion and their score on the overall and each aspect of interpreting performance. The study finds that interpreting learners generally have higher degrees of extraversion.Another finding indicates that extraversion was positively correlated with the overall interpreting performance and logical cohesion. And a near significant correlation was also found between extraversion and fluency. Some of these findings were consistent with previous findings in the field of language learning.Based on the results of this study, the implications for interpreter training are discussed and the limitations of the study are also presented.
