The church universities in China were funded and established by western missionaries in old China as institutions of higher education.At the beginning of their construction,religionization and Westernization were one of their characteristics.However,in China's special historical environment,church universities have actively or passively begun the process of their sinicization and secularization.This article will first analyze the reasons for the establishment of church universities.Then take Cheeloo University,St.John's University,Yanjing University as examples to analyze the nature and characteristics of the church universities.Moreover,analyze the process of sinicization and secularization of the three missionary universities until 1937 according to the specific historical background and historical data from three aspects,including the weakening of religious education,the development of English education and vocational education and the Chinese traditional culture education.Lastly the progress of the three church universities in sinicization and secularization will be compared and analyzed.
