A Study On Guwen Shengxi

Sun Haibo was an influential linguist and a scholar on palaeography in the period of ROC.His book Jiaguwen Bian(??????)was a must read dictionary of the oracle bone inscriptions influenced generations of scholars,and his achievements on history and interpretions of the oracle bone inscriptions were remarkable.But Guwen Shengxi(??????),a of ancient scripts followed by Jiaguwen Bian(1934)was still unfamiliar and underappreciated to academic community.Guwen Shengxi was published in 1935,written by Sun Haibo.This dictionary of ancient scripts is a book arranged the oracle bone inscriptions and the inscriptions on bronze by order of 22 rhymes in old Chinese wich according to the old Chinese rhymes researchs theorized by Wang Niansun and Kong Guangseng in Qing dynasty.And as one of the pioneers who researched ancient scripts under the old Chinese rhymes view in modern history,this book also started a new editing mode of this kind of dictionaries of ancient scripts.Meanwhile,Sun Haibo argued that Liushu(??)only applied to small seal scripts,and would failed to ancient scripts.So he raised the Four Classes theory to classify ancient scripts into pictograph,hieroglyph,phonetic loan,derivative and phonogram,aimed to classify the types of ancient scripts in a new way was presented in the preamble by Sun,this theory was ahead of its time and remarkably reasonable.This thesis tried to introduce the editing mode of Guwen Shengxi and the theory of Four Classes,analyze the classification and explanation of ancient scripts in the book,and revalue its seminal merit academically.
