Free indirect discourse,as an important mode of speech/thought presentation, can create quite subtle narrative effects through its complex linguistic features. In Allan Poe's classical short story Ligeia, free indirect discourse was widely adopted to describe the character's conceptual work. While in the Chinese translations of Ligeia,it is obvious to find that there are big differences among the translations of free indirect discourse. As a result,it will influence not only the narrative effects of free indirect discourse in target text but also the literariness of the literary work itself.Based on this phenomenon, this paper will take Xu Ruchun's translation as the research object.Besides, literary stylistic approaches will also be introduced in it to make a better understanding about the relationship between the linguistic features of free indirect discourse and corresponding narrative effects. The study will enrich the translation studies of free indirect discourse and it is meaningful to preserve literariness of foreign literary works. This paper is a descriptive translation study.By introducing literary stylistic approaches, the focus of the study will be put in exploring practical translation methods about free indirect discourse on the basis of analyzing its linguistic features and functions.Through the study,it demonstrates that the complicated linguistic features severely influence the translation of free indirect discourse. Therefore,to deal well with the translation,it depends on a precise consideration of its linguistic features in specific context. In general, the stable linguistic features of free indirect discourse like parenthesis, repeating parts and iconic adverbs can be dealt well with by adopting literal translation. In this way, both the readability of target text and the narrative effects of free indirect discourse can be guaranteed. While in the more complex translation,it needs to analyze the linguistic features in both lexical and syntactic level particularly. And then corresponding translation methods like amplification, substitution and reorganization should be adopted to preserve the narrative effects of free indirect discourse as possible.
