This thesis focuses on the translation of free indirect speech in Emma. The author of this thesis attempts to emphasize the literary significance of preserving the Austen's unique presentation of FIS in the fictional translation and to clarify the strategies for translating Austen's FIS.Different from the previous studies on the translation quality of Austen's FIS,this thesis would discuss how translators deal with the presentation of Austen's FIS and whether a duplicated preservation of FIS should necessarily result in the same literary effects and functions in the translations. With the aim of clarifying the crucial role of FIS in Austen's works,I summarize the stylistic and narrative features how Austen presents FIS,in light of this, research on the translation of Austen's FIS could be conducted from the perspective of regular presentation and peculiar presentation of Austen's FIS in Emma.A separate study on the special presentation peculiar to Emma bridges the existing gap in the research of translating Austen's FIS in Emma, and in the meantime it illustrates my innovative engagement in this thesis. In the discussion of case study, the author chooses two translation versions of Emma, one is from Liu Zhongde, the other from Sun Zhili,so as to demonstrate the differential literary effects of representing FIS.By comparing two translation versions, the author summarizes the suitable translation strategies in relation to different presentation of FIS.In summary,it is demonstrated that due to the differences in language and literary traditions,a duplicated preservation of original FIS will not necessarily reproduce the equivalent functions and effects as the original ones. Therefore,in terms of the regular presentation of FIS,translators are suggested to perform a strategy featured by literal translation in order to represent the stylistic features of FIS in the translations. As for the special presentation of FIS,it is advisable to utilize the strategy dominated by free translation to reproduce the original style. In order to further my research in the translation of Austen's FIS,the author also offers some suggestions to study the translation strategies for presenting the translation of FIS based on Austen's works.
