As a traditional virtue of the Chinese nation, diligence is the key factor for students to achieve academic success.Under the unfavorable conditions of relatively poor running schools and weak teacher resources in vast rural areas,it is particularly important for students’ diligence to be successful in their studies.Studies have found that the effect of diligence on academic performance is influenced by learning goals, learning strategies, etc. However, the specific mechanism of diligence affecting academic achievement is not clear. Therefore, the Diligence investment compiled by Bernard(1991)is first revised to form a measurement tool that conforms to Chinese cultural characteristics and has good reliability and validity index in the study.Secondly,it discusses the relationship between the diligence quality and academic achievement of rural middle school students, and reveals the function mechanism of achievement goal orientation and learning strategies in order to find possible paths of diligence affecting academic success.Formed the following conclusions:1.The revised "Diligence Questionnaire" consists of 25 items, including five dimensions of motivation, learning persistence, concentration and assimilation, compliance and responsibility, and discipline, which has a good reliability and validity index and reaches the basics of psychometrics. The test of structural equivalence shows that the structure of Diligence Questionnaire is applicable to both left-behind and non-left-behind children.2.In addition to the focus of attention and assimilation, levels of diligence and other dimensions on rural middle school students are at a mid-to-high.In addition to the discipline dimension, female are significantly higher than male on the scores of diligence and other dimensions. There is an interaction between left-behind types and grades in diligence, motivation, and learning persistence.3.Learning strategies play a partial mediating role in effect of diligence on academic performance.Diligence not only significantly predicts academic achievement, but indirectly influences academic achievement through learning strategies.4.Achievement goal orientation plays a moderator in the mediating effect of learning strategies.Specifically, master avoidance goal moderates the effect of diligence through shallow strategies on academic achievement.Diligent individuals with high master avoidance goals tend to use shallow strategies to improve academic achievement.Master approach goal moderates the effect of diligence through metacognitive strategies on academic achievement.Diligent individuals with high master approaches tend to use metacognitive strategies to improve their academic achievement.
