Grit is an important factor for individual's success in academic.In consideration of poor conditions for running a school,lack of teachers,it is more important to have Grit in achieving academic success for rural junior high school students.However,what are the development characteristics of the rural junior high school students' Grit in China? What is the relationship between Grit and the academic achievement for rural junior high school students? What is the impact mechanism of Grit on academic achievement? There is still a lack of sufficient empirical research on these issues.To solve these questions,the first study constructs the theoretical structure of Grit based on interviews with university students,rural teachers and rural junior high school students,develops a Grit questionnaire and its psychometric indexes are examined.Basised on this,the second study reveals the development characteristics of rural junior middle school students' Grit,and explores the relationship between Grit,achievement goal orientation,self-regulated learning and academic achievement.The results are as follows:(1)the rural junior high school students' Grit questionnaire including perseverance of effort,consistency of interest and adaptability of situation,the internal consistency reliability of the overall Grit questionnaire and its three dimensions were 0.69-0.88,the test-retest reliability ranges from 0.47 to 0.96.Furthermore,structural equivalence test shows that the structure of this questionnaire is applicable to left behind children and non-left behind children.(2)there are significant gender differences in adaptability of situation and Grit scores,the scores of girls are significantly higher than those of boys;and there are significant grade differences in adaptability of situation,the score of the 9th grade students is significantly higher than junior two;then significant family economic conditions differences has been found in perseverance of effort,adaptability of situation and Grit scores,students coming from wealthier family score higher in the above three than students coming from well-off or general family;the interaction between left behind type and family economic condition has significant effect on rural junior middle school students' consistency of interest,left behind children from less affluent family score higher than those non-left behind children.(3)the Grit influences academic achievement by the chain mediating effect of mastery-approach goal and self-regulated learning.Grit influences self-regulated learning through mastery-approach goal,and then affects academic achievement.
