The Effect Of Global And Local Predictability On Eye Movement Control

Pedictability is an important factor in reading processing.Study about pedictability can make us have a deeper understanding of reading processing.In this study,we use eye tracking technology to make an empirical study of the global and local predictability in Chinese reading.Global predictability is the prediction of the whole text to the target word before the target word,and the local predictability is the prediction of the two characters to the target word before the target word.The design of experiment for single factor 3 levels(global predictability,local predictability,neutral)within subjects design.By comparing the eye movement of the target word in global predictability condition with it in the neutral condition,the global predictability effect of the target words in Chinese reading was investigated.By comparing the eye movement of the target word in local condition with it in the neutral condition,the local predictability effect of the target words in Chinese reading was investigated.The results showed that: In the first fixation duration,gaze duration and total fixation duration,the fixation duration of global and local predictability condition was significantly lower than the fixation duration of neutral condition.It show there are global and local predictability effects in Chinese reading.In the first fixation duration,gaze duration and total fixation duration,The fixation duration of local predictability condition was not significantly lower than the fixation duration of global predictability condition.It shows that local and global predictability have the same influence on the eye movement control of the readers.In the fixation position index,there is no significant difference in global predictability,local predictability and neutral conditions,indicating that both local and global predictability have no impact on readers' skipping.Through this study,we believe that in Chinese text reading,there is not only a significant global predictability effect,but also have the local predictability effect,and the local predictability effect is the same as the global predictability effect.However,both the local and global predictability will not affect the position of the reader's saccade,which may be due to the high skip rate in Chinese reading(greater than 60%),which leads to a ceiling effect.In summary,We think that the current eye movement control model only examines the effect of the global predictability,but does not explain and predict the mechanism of the effect of the local predictability effect,which provides empirical evidence for the application of the universal eye movement control model.
