A Study Of Chinese-english Code-switching In The Internet Communication Based On Yu Guodong's Adaptation Model

Code-switching in the Internet communication is a natural language phenomenon and the result of languages.It is defined as communicators switching one code to another in the Internet communication process.In Chinese Internet communication,English is the most frequently used language besides Chinese.Consequently,code-switching between Chinese and English is rather universal and extensive,even its frequency is getting higher and higher.With the development of globalization and high technology,the international cultural communication is becoming more and more extensive in the Internet communication.Besides,with the increasing number of overseas and returned students,bilinguals who communicate in Chinese and English are also increasing rapidly in the process of Internet communication.Therefore,at present,it is indispensable to research the phenomenon of Chinese-English code-switching in the Internet communication,which possesses practical significance and research value.This thesis takes the Chinese-English code-switching in the communicative tools such as online chat,discussion forum,blog as corpus and qualitative analysis as the main research approach.It applies Yu Guodong's Adaptation Model to carry out the research on Chinese-English code-switching in the Internet communication from three facets to expound the contents of adaptation to code-switching: in the first place,it studies the adaptation to linguistic reality,which is composed of linguistic traits and linguistic existence;then,it researches the adaptation to social conventions including social taboos,dirty language,sensitive topics and the Internet language;finally,it explores the adaptation to psychological motivations which has pragmatic functions such as emphasis,seeking convenience and succinctness,showing off and pursuing fashion.This dissertation,by analyzing data,summarizes the similarities and differences of Chinese-English code-switching in the course of Internet communication adapted to the above three aspects.Differences are reflected in the following three aspects: the frequency,form and reason of adaptation.Similarities are embodied in subsequent situations: communicators' conscious or unconscious behaviors in the adaptation forms;the need of a certain English level;the tendency of comprehension;clear communicative and language purposes.This thesis,of course,makes a detailedanalysis and exploration of its linguistic and structural characteristics for the purpose of revealing the rules of Chinese-English code-switching.This research has proved the scientificity and the practicability of Yu Guodong's Adaptation Model in the study of code-switching.Moreover,it assists people to understand Chinese-English code-switching in the process of Internet communication.At the same time,some strategies are presented to help communicators successfully perform Chinese-English code-switching in online communication in order to achieve the aim of quick and effective communication.In the end,this thesis elaborates how to use the strategies and methods of Chinese-English code-switching in the Modern Internet communication to improve the Internet communicative ability and the work efficiency.
