Vocabulary is the most important elements of English writing.One of the salient features of high marks in English writing is rich vocabulary expression.However,many students in high schools tend to use repeatedly vocabulary in writing and show little interest in English writing.In recent decades,researches on the relationship between vocabulary richness and writing have aroused great attention of language researchers at home and abroad.However,most of the researches are about college students' vocabulary richness in English writing.Few studies have touched upon vocabulary richness training in senior high school students' English writing.To bridge the gap,the present study is conducted the English vocabulary richness training to senior high school students in English writing,and explore if the training is effective.Specifically,the study is aimed to answer the following three questions:1.What is the effect of English vocabulary richness training on improving students' writing performance?2.What is the effect of English vocabulary richness training on vocabulary use strategies in senior high school students' English writing?3.What are the attitudes of the students toward English vocabulary richness training in English writing?The subjects in this study are students selected from Grade Two of Zhengzhou No.2 Senior High School.The experimental class(EC)is Class 1 with 48 students.The control class(CC)is Class 2 with 49 students.The experiment lasts nearly five months from September 2017 to January 2018.Apart from the normal English teaching,5 times of vocabulary richness training in each week is also added to EC.Three kinds of instruments are used for the present research,including test,questionnaire and interview.Through the analysis of the collected data,the study has yielded the following three results.(1)English vocabulary richness training can improve students' writing performance,and help them to reduce their repetition of simple words and to add the use of low frequency words in writing.(2)English vocabulary richness training can facilitate students' use of vocabulary strategies.Students start to realize the importance of vocabulary strategies and attempt to use vocabulary strategies in their writing,including avoiding vocabulary repetition,paying attention to the feedback from the teacher in writing,etc.(3)Most students hold positive attitudes towards vocabulary richness training.They believe that the training can enhance their confidence in English writing and raise their interests in English learning.
