A New Translation of The Analects by Lin Wusun was published in 2010.It embraces the elements of the new age on the basis of achievements of previous translations and research but has not attracted enough attention yet. Thus, this thesis, from the perspective of hermeneutics, tries to analyze the translation and the strategies in it.Fore-understanding,fusion of horizons, hermeneutic circle and history of effect are four main points of the theory.Fore-understanding is the basis of understanding and includes one's thoughts, standpoints and values before he tries to understand a new thing;Horizon is the range of vision that includes everything that can be seen from a particular vantage point,it focuses on deconstructing the understanding process.Hermeneutic circle is a long-term and developing process where iterative fusion of horizons happens. As to history of effect,it's the result of the hermeneutic circle. The horizon of the source text, translator and target culture will fuse twice during the translating process. However, distance of time-space,difference in culture and subjective elements of the translators result in incomplete fusion where foreignization and domestication strategies are used accordingly to better convey the meanings. And the translators have to initiate new strategies to deal with the new changes brought by the new age. This thesis, brought forth due to the deficiency of both domestic and overseas study, tries to analyze the translation in detail, especially how the translator adopts flexibly the strategies, how the translator deals with the challenges creatively and how these strategies finally work, based on the perspective of hermeneutics,to find its replicable value and the findings are as follows(1)Lin Wusun adopts foreignization as the main strategy and domestication as the supplementary strategy in the main text to achieve fusion of horizons. In specific terms, foreignization is used in dealing with the easily interpreted, easily understood or inexplicable parts, including proper nouns(names, places, ancient articles, activities and units of measurement),sentences, cultural interpretation, styles and rhetorics.Zero translation, transliteration and close translation in the proper nouns leave the exotic charm of language, culture and literature available for the readers to experience and limited connotation can encourage curiosity and thinking rather than cause misunderstanding among the readers.Contents that will cost great efforts to translate and interpret are the difficult part for the readers to understand, thus here, like the succinct but profound culture-loaded words, domestication is adopted.Confronting the obstacles positively,Lin Wusun deals with this part with the expressions and concepts that are familiar to the readers.(2)Lin Wusun arranges the complementary information scientifically. The prefaces are added to provide detailed and rich background information and to explain the controversial thoughts and place the main text in a vivid context in advance, helping the readers sort out related knowledge and prepare the proper attitudes for the sake of fluent reading. The footnotes, amalgamated notes and cut-in notes are set in small amount but of concise contents to fill the semantic gaps as well as classify the complex information,to help the readers understand the source text and encourage independent thinking without dampening their enthusiasm and patience.(3)Lin Wusun adopts the strategy of fragmented reading to display the profound contents of source text in a deft way, mainly by translating the terms of multiple meanings in fixed words and adding an index of summary of books under the same theme or about the same person to integrate information.Combining foreignization and domestication in the body part, thick translation and fragmented reading in paratext,Lin Wusun makes the main text and the paratext of The Analects supplement each other,by which he delivers the original meaning at the same time resolves the cultural difficulties, achieving fusion of horizons.
