The Impact Of Parenting Style On The Delay Discounting Of ADHD Children

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD)is defined on the basis of developmentally inappropriate inattention,motor activity,and impulsive behaviors.The dual pathway model of ADHD recognizes two quite distinct sub-types of the disorder.In one ADHD is the result of the dysregulation of action and thought resulting from poor inhibitory control.In the other ADHD is a motivational style characterized by an altered delay of reward gradient,which emphasis the importance of parenting style.Therefore,we tested parenting style's impact on the delay discounting of ADHD and normal children.This study combined questionnaire and experiment,with the use of Parenting Styles&Dimensions Questionnaire(PSDQ)and temporal discounting task(TD),to investigate the influence of parenting style on the delay discounting ability of 30 ADHD and normal children.In conclusion,this study explored the difference between the discounting rate of ADHD and normal children in different grades,the effect of parenting style on the delay discounting of both children.We found that(a)ADHD and normal children have similar discounting rates;(b)fourth grade of ADHD have steeper gradient,who prefer immediate over delayed rewards;(c)Authoritative parenting of father and mother have positive influence on discounting ability of ADHD;authoritarian parenting of mother have negative influence on discounting ability of ADHD;(d)Compared to mother,father's authoritative parenting put greater positive impact on ADHD;compared to father,mother's authoritarian parenting put greater negative impact on ADHD.This study indicates the importance of parenting style on the delay discounting of ADHD,and provide guidance for the treatment of ADHD children.
