The Influence Of Rural Mother’s Attachment And Parenting Style Upon The Ability Of Delay Of Gratification And Delay Strategy Of3-5Years’ Children

This dissertation aims at exploring the influence of mother’s attachment and parenting style upon her child’s ability of delay of gratification from a developmental viewpoint and in the Chinese rural context.86rural children range from3to5and their mother were included. The major purposes of this research are:1. To explore the developmental characters of the ability of delay of gratification for3-5year old rural children;2. To explore the use of delay strategy and the developmental features of delay strategy of3-5years old rural children in the Self-imposed delay paradigm;3. To explore the relation between maternal parenting style and the ability of delay of gratification of3-5rural children;4. To explore the relation between attachment of mother and the ability of delay of gratification of their children;5. To explore the relations among mother’s attachment, maternal parenting style and the ability of delay of gratification of their children.The major findings of this research were as below:1. For the3-5year old children, as they grow older, their ability of delay of gratification gets more improved, the gender difference was not significant, but the difference among different age groups was significant, and the ability of delay of gratification is a rapid developmental period from3years old to4years old.2. Attention shift is the most frequently used strategy. And there is a significant difference among different age groups. The critical stage for the development of attention shift strategy if from3years old to4years old.3. The mother attachment anxiety dimension is negatively related to the ability of delay of gratification, while attachment avoidance dimension and delay of gratification of3-5year old children is not significantly correlated.4. Permissive dimension of maternal parenting style and children’s ability of delay of gratification is significantly negatively related. And there is no significant difference between children’s delay of gratification and the authoritarian, doting, inconsistency or authoritative dimensions of parenting style.5. Compared with the anxiety dimension of attachment, the predictive effect of doting maternal parenting style is stronger.
