Explanation of word decides student’s understanding of words.Words are the basic unit of language expression.Word learning is the basic and primary task for international students to learn Chinese.For second language learners,the explanations of new word is the basic understanding of words,which is the most direct and effective way to learn new words.The With Comprehensive Intermediate/Advanced Chinese Course as the research object,this paper divided into five parts.The introduction part introduces the reasons,theoretical significance,literature review and main content and research methods of this paper.The first chapter introduces the general situation of teaching materials and new words.The second chapter conducts sampling survey of its texts and analyzes the word explanation in the textbook including the labeling of word’s part of speech,meanings,example sentence selection,meaning types,interpretation types,and interpretation methods.The third chapter in the form of questionnaire,investigates learners’ needs of words’ explanation and whether they are satisfied with it or not.The last chapter is the countermeasures and Suggestions.The investigation finds out that problems exist in word meanings selection and sorting,consistency among part of speech,meaning and example sentences,the degree of difficulty of word explanation,the imparting of cultural semantics and the editing guidelines.The meaning types of paraphrase can be divided into semantics according to different classification,including criteria: concept meaning,inner meaning,system meaning and semantics: language knowledge and cultural knowledge.Interpretation methods summarized as definition method(description),synonyms and antonyms interpretation method,the morpheme the interpretation,the negative type definition method,the grammatical meaning(syntax)and pragmatic meaning(semantics color,scope of pragmatics and match).This paper suggests making the definition of words more standard,scientific and accessible.The first is to strengthen the rigor and standardization of the writing of new words,including the unification of the method of speech tagging and the proofreading of teaching materials.The second is to improve the accuracy of the new word definitions and accessibility,including setting priorities and the principle of high frequency word meaning item selection,part-of-speech tagging,meanings and sample quantity must be corresponding to selectively add super-class words,raise the scientific nature of the definition and intelligibility,control the meaning of culture scale,avoid cultural conflict;The Third,pay attention to students’ learning needs and improve the level of word interpretation.correct understanding of words directly affects students’ language expression and application ability,and determines the students’ correct understanding of words.The study of the new words has both theoretical and practical significance for the compilation,selection and use of new words.So it is very important to study new words from the perspective of paraphrase.In the study of the explanation of the new word,the research on the meaning of the target language is relatively small.However,there are also fewer research achievements on the Comprehensive Intermediate/Advanced Chinese Course in the study of the definition of words in specific teaching materials.
