| The Right Bank of Argun River created by Chi Zijian,as the full-length novel of Chinese minority, won the seventh Mao Dun Literature Prize in 2008.The English version translated by the sinologist Bruce Humes with the new name of The Last Quarter of the Moon was published by Harvill Secker in 2013.After its publication,it has been widely praised by the overseas readers and gained the attention among the domestic and foreign scholars. As a successful translation model of Chinese ethnic literature,it is of great significance for the Chinese ethnic literature to go to the world. The scholars who are engaged in the translation study have paid attention to the overseas influence of the translation and the reception status among the overseas readers, but the discussion about the translator’s cultural identity and the translator’s subjectivity still needs to be further strengthened. In view of this situation, taking The Last Quarter of the Moon as a case analysis, the study adopts qualitative research method to discuss the translator’s subjective behavior in source-text selection under the influence of Bruce Humes’ identity as "cultural hybrid" from his selection of the theme on ethnic minorities and The Right Bank of Argun River, analyzes the translator’s subjectivity in translational behavior from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels, and tries to present the readers a real image of the translator. There are three major findings.Firstly,Bruce Humes’identity as "cultural hybrid"has a great influence on the translator’s subjectivity in the source-text selection and also affects his selection of the theme on ethnic minorities and The Right Bank of Argun River.Secondly,in translation behavior, the translator gives full play to the subjective consciousness by adopting various translation methods, such as literal translation, transliteration and transliteration with explanation,so as to achieve the faithfulness at lexical level, the idiomaticness at syntactic level and the comprehensiveness at textual level.Thirdly,as the "mediation" of cross-cultural communication, the translator should preserve the characteristics of ethnic culture and enhance the discourse power in the translation of ethnic literature. At the same time, the translator should also take the target readers’ acceptability into account, give full play to the subjective consciousness, properly manipulate the text, and promote the Chinese ethnic literature to the world. The thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction that introduces the background of the study, the purpose of the study, the methodology of the study, and the structure of the study. The second chapter is a literature review that introduces the research status of The Right Bank of Argun River and The Last Quarter of the Moon. The third chapter is to discuss the translator’s subjectivity in source-text selection under the influence of Bruce Humes’ identity as "cultural hybrid",points out Bruce Humes’identity as "cultural hybrid" and its influence, and elaborates the translator’ subjectivity in source-text selection from the selection of the themes on ethnic minorities and the selection of The Right Bank of Argun River. The fourth chapter analyzes the translator’s subjectivity in translational behavior from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels, and shows the translator’s faithfulness at lexical level, the idiomaticness at syntactic level and the comprehensiveness at textual level. The fifth chapter is conclusion that summarizes the major findings, points out the limitations of this study and puts forward the suggestions for future research. |
