In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century,Klimt,an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement,led the trend of Austria's art and culture with his unique style of painting.Klimt had a great influence on the Western painting development by breaking the norms of the conventional classic academic art.Instead,he blended the art and cultural elements,techniques and ways of expression from the East and the West and form his unique ornamental style.Klimt's paintings are famous for its distinctive ornamental features.This thesis summarizes the development and switch of his painting style from different periods and analyzes the ornamental expressions in his paintings,such as color,composition and lines.The aim is to inspire new ways of expression in painting and showcase beautiful ornamental techniques on two-dimension art.In the middle and late stage of Klimt's creation,he integrated numerous foreign elements into his painting,perfectly blending the East and West style.In this part,the author analyzed Klimt's portraits of young ladies in his late stage of creation and the masterpieces in his heyday.Based on the study in this thesis,Klimt drew inspirations from the traditional Chinese paintings and Chinese folk art as well as the mosaic techniques from Japanese Faye and the Byzantine Empire.The blending of these elements has highlighted the distinctive ornamental style and the readability of his artworks.Klimt's spirit of inclusiveness and innovation is an inherent requirement of contemporary art,which serves a good example as to how to learn from the great art and culture from different nations.The study of Klimt's painting style can also serve as a valuable learning material for future painting and creation.
