In the 1920 s and 1930 s,Harlem Renaissance appeared in Harlem,New York,U.S.It not only shows African American unprecedented creativity, but also reflects the prosperity of African Americans in literature and art. What is more,Harlem Renaissance is also regarded as one of the most significant events in African American literature and art in the 20 th century. However,in addition to its literary and artistic achievements, the Harlem Renaissance is also a new attempt to eliminate racial discrimination, pursue racial equality, and integrate into mainstream American society by "Negro" intellectuals such as W.E.B Du Bois,James Weldon Johnson,John Locke, and Charles Johnson, etc.Based on the research results of Harlem Renaissance, this thesis abstracts and analyzes the role of "Negro" intellectuals in the pursuit of equality and freedom. This thesis elaborates the role of "Negro" intellectuals in the Harlem Renaissance from three dimensions. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this thesis is divided into three chapters.Chapter I extracts the role of "Negro" intellectuals as militants by analyzing the behaviors that the "Negro" intellectuals protested in major journals such as The Crisis and The Opportunity, promoted anti-lynching bills and opposed segregation.Chapter II refines the role of "Negro" intellectuals as defenders by affirming the ethnic characteristics and establishing a new image of African Americans.Chapter III extracts the role of "Negro" intellectuals as promoters by analyzing the behavior of "Negro" intellectuals to promote cooperation between black and white writers and to improve black and white racial relationships."Negro" intellectuals have been devoted to helping African Americans actively integrate into mainstream American society. In summary, this thesis finds that the transition of the roles of "Negro" intellectuals from radical militants to self-help defenders and promoters is a constant attempt to achieve the goal of integrating into the mainstream of American society with equality and respect. The "Negro" intellectuals attempt to prove the intellectual potential of African Americans by developing black cultures actively, changing the image of traditional blacks in the eyes of whites.Their ultimate aim is to win the respect of whites and pave the way for eventual integration into the mainstream society of the United States and the realization of racial equality.
