The translation selected the first and second chapters of Jeffrey C Stewart's biography The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke, which won the 69 th national book award for nonfiction in 2018 and the 103 rd Pulitzer prize on April 15,2019.This text belongs to biographical literary genre, which is characterized by history and literariness. The hero of the text,Locke,is the pioneer of the Harlem Renaissance, known as the “Father of the Harlem Renaissance”.The selected text introduces Locke's living environment since his childhood,as well as the political influence of his father's family and the ideology of his mother's family, which led to his bumpy, contradictory and brilliant life. The background of this text is the era of racial division in which African Americans live.Under the combined effect of the big era and the small family,a generation of black writers and politicians represented by Locke was born.Based on the characteristics of the biographical text, the translator carries out translation practice under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theories proposed by Newmark.Semantic translation focuses on the restoration and equivalence of the style, semantics and characteristics of the source text.Communicative translation,on the other hand, puts more emphasis on readers' response, and through some translation strategies, readers can get the same response from the translated text as from the original text, paying more attention to readability and literariness. This translation report mainly consists of four parts. The first part is the description of translation task, which mainly introduces the source of translation task, text introduction, text type and characteristics,as well as the meaning of translation project. The second part is the translation process, which introduces the preparation of tools and theories before translation,as well as the modification of the translation process. The third part is the case study of translation, which mainly includes the application of semantic translation and communicative translation,as well as the analysis of translation difficulties.Under the guidance of theories, the author selected translation strategies such as addition, subtraction and separation to analyze the cases. The fourth part is the summary of translation practice.
