Zhuangzi is one of the greatest philosophers in ancient China. He inherited and developed the ideas of Laozi and epitomized the Daoist philosophy.Zhuangzi(Master Zhuang)and the Zhuangzi(the text named after him)have a unique place in Chinese history and world history.Instead of attaching himself to the outside things in a restless world,Zhuangzi sought in himself spiritual perfection.Being a “virtuous man” is central to his ideology, because, for him, what matters most are digging for the buried truth. His contemplation on this belief resulted in the entry into a realm of perfection, the exclusive spiritual communication with the universe, and a modest living on earth.A “virtuous man” rejoices over his loneliness in his communication with the universe, unaffected by,and without looking askance at,all the things around him.Neither limited nor weighed down by them, such a omniscient man transcends everything and becomes one with nature and universe. The idea of “virtuous man” is very much a product of debate between Zhuangzi and contemporary or earlier philosophers.Through an argument between Zhuangzi and the Mohist and Confucian philosophers, this article tries to give an in-depth and detailed analysis of this idea in its proper connection with “perfection”,“selflessness”,“inaction”,and “adherence to the truth”.If the previous discussion denotes the innate nature of being a “virtuous man”,this part tries to deal with its outward appearance,or what a “virtuous man” should be like: nurtures and protects life, delights in beautiful things, and lives a carefree wandering life.Such is the internal veins of Zhuangzi's “virtuous man”.The idea of “virtuous man” and its implications for the modern world cannot be overstated. Its significance is explored through a discussion of the “ideal personality”.Modernity has brought with it tons of problems. The mind-blowing idea of “virtuous man” is a beacon for those struggling to survive. This article, apart from the introduction and the conclusion,is divided into the following parts: 1.The basis of “virtuous man”.Explains its foundation in terms of its theoretical principle “Dao” and criticism of Confucianism.2.What is a “virtuous man”.Analyzes what it means to be a “virtuous man” in terms of “perfection”,“selflessness”,“inaction”,and “virtuous man's truth”.3.How a “virtuous man” behaves.Reveals how far he can go concerning his life-nurturing practice, his aestheticism, and his carefree wandering.4.Implications.Explores the impact of “virtuous man” on the historical “ideal personality” and modern self-cultivation.
