Graham Green,a famous contemporary writer in Britain,used the technique of realism to reflect widespread pessimism and survival predicament of public about the two World War.He was the most remarkable chronicler of human consciousness and worry in the 20 th century.Most of the studies on his novels are based on the analysis of single works,and the tragic problem of Green's novels has not been explained effectively and deeply.This dissertation will research both popular fictions and serious fictions of Greene such as Stamboul Train,A Gun for Sale,Brighton Rock,The End of Affair,The Quiet American and The Comedians.By presenting the tragic nature of Green's novels and analyzing the causes of such tragic nature,we can understand the literary meaning and society meaning of Green's novels in realistic novels of the 20 th century.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,this paper is divided into three parts: The first part analyzes the tragic expression of Green's six novels,namely the three tragic forms of good versus evil,the neglected beauty and the submerged truth.From the tragic presentation of the destruction of good and the triumph of evil,the neglect of beauty,the drowning of truth and the shelving of truth,Green's tragic thinking on the social status of his time is considered.The second part is on the three intertwined aspects,from the ugly and noble characters,events of true and false,aesthetic inclination of contains and reflection to explore his novel's mixed tragic aesthetic aspects,thus reveals a kind of aesthetic wisdom that goes through suffering,and affirms the ideal of truth,kindness and beauty that shakes people's hearts with twists and turns.The third chapter explores novel has the cause of the tragic vision,Green's novels not only tragic and influenced by their social and time background,also projects the author special life experience and undergoing,but also affected by factors such as their reading habits.This dissertation's research angle and method is literature review and comparative analysis,studies the type,the tragic aesthetic characteristics and the reasons behind.The standpoint is that Green is influenced by many factors,he thought deeply about human nature and realistic society,and expressed them in his novel.
