A Study On Zhu Tianwen's Acceptance Of Italo Calvino's Literary Influence

Zhu Tianwen is a famous contemporary writer and screenwriter in Taiwan.She had wrote many novels like The Legend,A City of Hot Summer,Fin de Siècle Splendour,Notes of a Desolate Man as well as screenplays like The Time to Live and the Time to Die,Three Times,The Assassin and so on.Italo Calvino is a Western writer with profound world influence.His works Invisible Cities,If on a Winter's Night a Traveler are exquisitely conceived and rich in connotation,which are praise highly by contemporary writers.At the same time,as a literary theorist,his views on the value of literature raised in the Six Memos for the Next Millennium have brought creative inspiration to the contemporary author's novel creation.Witch's Brew is a novel written by Zhu Tianwen recently.In this book,Zhu Tianwen changed her gorgeous decadent writing style.She took the witch as the narrative perspective,used the digression narrative technique and brisk narrative rhythm described the current society state in Taiwan.In the appendix to the Witch's Brew,Tang Nuo mentioned the influence of Calvino on Zhu Tianwen's writing,which was acknowledged by Zhu.This thesis will focus on Witch's Brew,and analyze the acceptance of Calvino 's influence in the late Zhu Tianwen's creation stage.Then further compare the creation of the two writers to explain how Zhu Tianwen creatively absorbed and transformed the literary factors of Calvino.On the basis of this,it will analyzes the reasons of Zhu's acceptance of Calvino's literary influence,and discusses the significance of Chinese writers accepting the influence of Western writers.The first chapter of the thesis will start from the specific text of the Witch's Brew,and analyze the narrative characteristics of Witch's Brew from two aspects: the narrative structure of the digression and the light narrative language.At the same time,the thesis will combine with Calvino 's idea of literary creation elaborated in the Six Memos for the Next Millennium,to illustrate Zhu' s acceptance and absorption of Calvino 's literature idea in her later period of creation.In the second chapter,the thesis compares Zhu Tianwen and Calvino from three aspects:the creation process and the perseverance of literature,attention to the problems of modernity,Calvino's pursuit of "encyclopedia" type novel and the "knowledgeable" writing style of Zhu,to illustrate the similarities between them and pave the way for the analysis of the reasons why Zhu Tianwen accepted the influence of Calvino's literature idea.The third chapter of the thesis focuses on the analysis of the reasons why Zhu Tianwen accepted Calvino's literature influence.First of all,Zhu is a writer who has a persistent pursuit of the novel's artistry.And Calvino is a master of the art of the novel.Zhu learned from him that was consistent with her literary pursuit.Secondly,Zhu Tianwen and Calvino shared a common spiritual pursuit.They both were very concerned about the fate of human beings and presented the topic in their works.This is also the aesthetic premise of Zhu Tianwen's acceptance of Calvino's influence.Finally,Zhu Tianwen had long been seeing as the successor of Zhang Ailin and Hu Lancheng.In her latter period of creation,she wanted to make a breakthrough.So she turned to learn from the master of Western literature,to form her own style.In the last chapter,the thesis explains the significance of Zhu Tianwen's acceptance of Calvino's literature influence.On the one hand,as for Zhu Tianwen herself,she learned from Western literary author consciously,and constantly turned it into her own creation,which reflected her continuous learning spirit as well as her persistent pursuit of literature and her efforts to break through herself.As a representative writer of contemporary Taiwan,the creation of Zhu Tianwen is closely related with the changes of Taiwan society and the trend of cultural and literary thoughts.Through the analysis of Zhu Tianwen's creation,we can get a glimpse of the experience of Taiwanese writers learning and accepting from Western writers,and get inspiration.
