On The Evaluation And Improvement Of Interpretation Quality From The Perspective Of “uses And Gratifications” Theory

The quality of interpretation has always been a focus for the study of interpretation,and one of the purposes of relative researches lies in evaluating and improving it.The thesis probes into the evaluation and improvement of interpretation quality from the perspective of “Uses and Gratifications” theory,a classic theory in Communication Studies.The thesis regards interpretation as a way of communication.In the communicative event of interpretation,interpreters are not only message receivers but also message senders.While sending messages by interpreting,interpreters must give heed to listeners' different expectations and try to gratify them.The thesis puts forward the hypothesis that listeners' expectations exert some influences on the evaluation of interpretation quality and on the strategies that interpreters may adopt to improve the quality of interpretation.In order to verify the hypothesis,the thesis proposes 20 criteria to assess interpretation quality,and designs a questionnaire survey.The questionnaire survey asks respondents to rate their expectations and gratifications of interpretation quality in terms of the said 20 criteria.With the help of online questionnaire survey,the thesis manages to obtain 390 valid questionnaires.The analysis of questionnaire results demonstrate that listeners' expectations do influence the quality of interpretation and the strategies that interpreters may adopt to improve the quality of interpretation,and that interpreters should adjust their strategies in view of listeners' expectations.Based on the analysis of questionnaire results,the thesis suggests that interpreters should consider the common expectations of listeners and highlight the specific expectations of listeners.The thesis hopes those suggestions could assist professional interpreters in their work,and meanwhile help to improve the practice of interpretation learners.
