| In the context of globalization of information,simultaneous interpretation has been widely used in live TV programs,which becomes a highlight of China's mass media during its development.Live simultaneous interpretation has accelerated the news report process and greatly enriched the contents and forms of TV programs.Live sports has been an integral part of TV programs and become popular in China.Yet China is a late starter in live simultaneous interpretation.Research in this regard is insufficient and many problems remain to be settled.In order to support the progress in live sports programs,this thesis attempts to analyze the features and problems of such programs employing live simultaneous interpretation from the perspective of the uses and gratifications theory,thereby bringing forward a number of suggestions for,improving the quality of live simultaneous interpretation in China.On May 1st 1958,China's first live sports program,a basketball contest,was broadcasted on China Central Television(CCTV).As the reform and opening up deepens,both China's politics and economy have undergone profound changes.China's sports industry has also gained rapid progress especially in live contest broadcasting.On January 1st,1995,China Central Television Sports(CCTV-5)was established and gradually covered both domestic and international sports events.Since then,sports TV has embarked on the path of professionalization.This thesis first introduces the definition of live simultaneous interpretation followed by a discussion of its features and constraints.The following chapter of this thesis explains main concepts of the audience-centered uses and gratifications theory and analyzing the two stages in the development of this theory.It is argued that it is necessary for TV interpreters to play a dual role and meet the dual requirements for both simultaneous interpreters and broadcasters,so as to achieve better communication effect of TV programs employing live simultaneous interpretation.In order to find out how effectively China's sports TV programs employ live simultaneous interpreting and whether the performance of TV interpreters meets the dual requirements,the author conducted a survey among 40 viewers.This thesis selected the live simultaneous interpretation for the 2016 NBA Hall of Fame awards ceremony on CCTV-5 as material,studied the first concern of the audience on their viewing motivation and satisfaction,and queried the audience about why they watched the live news program and how gratified they were with the program before it solicited their assessments of the TV interpreters' performances on the basis of 20 criteria listed by the author.The survey results show that the primary purpose of the audience to watch live sports programs is to acquire knowledge.Although most of the audience said they were gratified after watching the live video clip,there were still some viewers who had little knowledge about live simultaneous interpretation and thus had higher level of expectation toward these programs.About half of the viewers agreed that the performance of the television interpreters would affect their attitudes toward the overall program and simultaneous interpretation,and sports programs employing live simultaneous interpretation would not be their primary choice in the future.Based on these findings,the thesis made suggestions for both TV interpreters and TV program producers.The author presents five recommendations for TV interpreters:to reduce unreasonable pauses and repairs,obtain broadcasting skill training,choose a proper interpreting style and to control their psychological stress within a reasonable range.The author also makes three suggestions for TV stations:to improve the working environment for TV interpreters,conduct a survey among television viewers and collect their attitudes toward the program and the interpreters' performance,arrange more than one interpreter for heavy workloads. |
