A Study Of E-C Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

Nowadays,interpretation is an important way for cross-cultural communication among different countries.The interpretive theory,one of the most influential interpreting theories,breaks through the traditional modes of thinking in the translation community and puts forward the triangle model—comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation.This theory believes that interpreters should convey sense rather than language symbols.The birth of the theory sources from practices,meanwhile,it provides guidance for translation practices.China and the U.S.have maintained diplomatic relations and frequent bilateral trade since1972.Both of them are members of some international or regional organizations.As Donald Trump becomes new president of the U.S.,his policies in different fields have a profound influence at home and abroad.Joint Address to Congress is important to the future relation between the two countries.Besides,there is not much analysis or interpretation of Trump's speeches and no one has analyzed his speeches by using the interpretive theory.Therefore,interpreting the speech consecutively and analyzing the interpretation by using the interpretive theory are necessary.It is necessary and significant to put this important theory into practice and summarize interpreting strategies for consecutive interpreting based on this theory.This project includes four chapters.The appendix includes the source text and the interpreted version.The first chapter describes the task,including project background and theoretical basis.Project background introduces the speaker and content of the address.Theoretical basis introduces the interpretive theory and its triangle model.The second chapter describes the process of the project,including pre-interpreting,interpreting process and difficulties during interpreting.Pre-interpreting consists of preparation of the content of the speech and building of a glossary.The second chapter also analyzes the difficulties during interpreting the address from three aspects,including the content of the address,the speaker and the audiences.The third chapter analyzes the application of interpreting strategies based on the interpretive theory during interpreting.There are mainly three strategies: segmentation based on semantic units;comprehension through deverbalization;reformulation information through cognitive complements.The fourth chapter summarizes the interpreting process and practical significance of the report.
