In the English to Chinese simultaneous interpreting practice, interpreters are usually required to respond within seconds.Under such a stressful condition, there are possibilities of misinterpreting the source language, which will significantly affect the quality of the interpretation. To overcome this problem,an effective language interpretation approach, known as"deverbalization",was proposed by the French Interpretive School that can help the interpreters to a great extent.According to the guidance of the Interpretive Theory, the E-C simulated simultaneous interpreting of 2018 Yale College Opening Assembly Address was studied in the present work. The author encountered several problems during this study. For examples, large amounts of information was collected from the speaker in a very short time;the speaker spoke in a third language, which was incomprehensible to the interpreter, and the speaker sang a song at the beginning of the speech to start the topic. After introducing a successful deverbalization of the source language, the author used interpretation strategies, like anticipation, information ellipsis, information supplement, sentence restructuring, repair, inference, and summarizing flexibly to solve problems that occurred in the interpreting practices, thus providing a high-quality simultaneous interpreting. This study provides some prospective suggestions for improving professional interpreting skills of the interpreters. These suggestions are to develop the vocabularies and background knowledge, and to take part in further field interpreting practices for getting practical experience on the impromptu problems. This paper consists of five parts:an introduction to the background of the study;an overview on the guiding theory of the E-C simulated simultaneous interpreting practice;a description on the interpreting practice;case analysis;and conclusions. |
