A Study On The Strategies And Methods Of Subtitle Translation In TED Talks From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the development of technology,information globalization' has been developing rapidly and irresistibly across the world.Nowadays people tend to get information from the whole world through the Internet at home.At the same time,subtitle translation is playing an increasingly important role during this process.As we all know,a good translation can help break the estrangement between two languages and help promote the exchange of different languages and cultures.TED(Technology,Entertainment,and Design)Talks serve as a non-profit outstanding platform which enables Chinese audience to get access to the foreign culture,the advanced ideas and firsthand knowledge on TED website.Given the promptness and freshness of TED Talks,as well as its updated knowledge and language,the demand for the rendition of language and the content in TED Talks is accordingly high.However,most TED Talks are translated by the fansub groups who do not set and follow certain uniform and strict criteria,so it's rather hard to guarantee the quality of the translation,making it hard for the Chinese audience to understand and appreciate the translated TED Talks.Only expressive and faithful subtitle translation can enable the audience to grasp professional knowledge in certain field and appreciate the real exotic culture so as to gain excellent viewing experience.As we know,functional equivalence theory requires the translated text to be equivalent to the original text in terms of functions so that the target-text receptors may have the same or similar response with the source-text receptors.Based on her translation practice of TED subtitles,the author in the present study attempts to make an analysis on the appropriate translation strategies and methods of TED subtitles under the guidance of functional equivalence theory with the aim of improving the quality of subtitle translation,and to achieve the closest natural equivalence so as to offer the audiences with the best viewing experience.It is expected that the present study will shed some useful insight into the in-depth study of the translation of TED-Talks.
