A Report On The Subtitle Translation Of Cultural Exploration Across The Taiwan Straits From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the increasingly frequent cultural exchanges between China and the world and the enhancement of China's cultural soft power,various forms of film works spring up like mushrooms.As an important modern screen art and a means of mass media,documentary is gradually playing an indispensable role in cultural exchanges and popularization.Therefore,analyses and researches on documentary subtitle translating practices are of great significance.This report is based on the translating practice for Royal Communication Co.Ltd.The author analyzes the characteristics,requirements,methods and strategies of documentary subtitle translation from the perspective of Nida's functional equivalence theory,clarifies and underlines the roles of documentary as a cultural carrier in this report.This report consists of four chapters.Chapter one introduces the translating task,including the characteristics,difficulties and process of the task.Chapter two analyzes the subtitle and documentary subtitle translation on the basis of the previous research and the author's thinking.Chapter three sketches Nida's functional equivalence theory and the applicability and necessity of the theory to subtitle translation.Chapter four is a case study,expounding the Chinese-English translating of the subtitles in light of functional equivalence theory.Through detailed demonstration on lexical,syntactical and stylistic levels,the report focuses on the specific conditions of coping with information transmission and cultural popularization by means of literal translating,paraphrasing,condensation,citing,restructuring.This report aims to provide references for documentary subtitle translating practices and arouse further reflections and attract more audience to the documentary.
