There is such a sentence in Zhu De's "Recollection my mother" : Such a kind of language phenomenon exists in Modern Chinese:“When we figure out the correct path for Chinese revolution,we join the Communist Party of China.” In the paper Can Subjects be Placed in Prepositional Structures written by Li Yude, sentences in which subjects can be placed in a prepositional structure as adverbials are regarded as“sentences with the Subject is included in the Adverbials”.This judgment had provoked the discussion,in the grammar field, whether this syntactic phenomenon conformed to the norms or not.Cui Tanghua and Liu Heyun offered abundant Chinese facts as the corpus support for this conclusion;Shao Aiji,Jiang Shengda and Zheng Wenzhen denied, from different perspectives, the legitimacy of “The Subject is included in the Adverbial”;Liao Ping, despite the fact that he accepted “The Subject is included in the Adverbial”,reserved his opinions towards it.In general, fettered by traditional grammatical norms, which are deeply rooted in our language, this problem hasn't fully discussed. In this paper,it is believed that “The Subject is included in the Adverbial” is a syntactic rule, which, after linguistic practice for a long time, has obtained sufficient grounds. Therefore, the legitimacy of “The Subject is included in the Adverbial” will be discussed from the following four aspects:First of all, categories of "The Subject is included in the Adverbials",based on rich linguistic facts of ancient Chinese, are summarized.Various elements which subjects are used as in adverbials are summed up and categorized, followed by feature analysis, from the perspectives of syntax and rhetoric, etc.,based on typical corpus being collected. The sentence,“I for the country's management”,is taken as an example for structural, semantic and pragmatic researches of “zhiyu” structure.A conclusion is drawn here that, the application of this sentence pattern is people's active choice of discourse combination influenced unconsciously by the syntactic prosody.Part 2 deals with the categorization of sentence patterns of “The Subject is included in the Adverbial” in modern Chinese, with a systematic analysis of each category. It is discovered that adverbials in this sentence pattern are always prepositions of time, while prepositions of place often carry with them certain premises. That kind of sentence of “Where we arrived” is thoroughly analyzed.Part 3 discusses the legitimacy of this sentence pattern from the perspectives of rhythm and anaphora and clarifies statements of temporal complex sentences.Temporal causes connected by “when” can be identified as temporal complex sentences, yet not all the sentences containing a“The Subject is included in the Adverbial” can be treated as temporal complex sentences. In the last part, some ideas, based on the legitimacy of “The Subject is included in the Adverbial”,are explained in terms of the establishment of traditional grammatical system in modern Chinese, and it is suggested that a grammatical system, which belongs exclusively to Chinese, should be created based on the meaning, structure and their pragmatic meanings.A method combing quantitative and qualitative analyses is used in this paper. It allows linguistic facts to play their supportive role in theoretical construction.Based on frequently-used sentence types in modern Chinese, this paper sums up and analyzes those elements involved in“The Subject is included in the Adverbial” as much as possible. Then, the legitimacy of “The Subject is included in the Adverbial” is verified in this paper. Therefore,we ought to admit the legitimacy of this structure based on textual researches of grammatical facts and recognize its legal status in the grammatical system.
