In China,because the examination oriented education system is dominate in our China education all the time,most of our teachers and students focus too much on English test scores and ignore the study of oral English in the English class.As important organizers and instructors of teaching activities in English class,English teachers interact with students in class and give their feedback to students' performance,which has an important influence on students' motivation and confidence in their oral English.In recent years,the effects of teachers' feedback on the efficiency of English teaching in the class have attracted wide attention of many scholars.But there are few scholars who concentrate on the influence of the teachers' verbal feedback on students' motivation to speak English.Therefore,mainly based on David Nunan's theory of teacher feedback and R.C.Gardner's theory of motivation,the author writes this paper to study the influence of teachers' verbal feedback on students' motivation to speak English by using classroom observation,Questionnaires and interviews.The author focuses on three questions to research:(1)What are students' attitudes towards different kinds of teachers' verbal feedback?(2)Why do students have different attitudes towards different kinds of teachers' verbal feedback?(3)What are the influence of different kinds of teachers' verbal feedback on students' oral English?The author makes an investigation and analysis of the data on these three questions that are collected in the Wei Xian No.1 senior high school.From classroom observation,the author finds that most of English teachers use positive verbal feedback in their class to give students evaluation,correction,guidance and supplement according to students' expressions and performance in English.And under teachers' positive verbal feedback,most of students are active and they speak more English than usual.From the data collected from questionnaires and interviews,the author also finds that in English class,most of students prefer their English teachers' positive verbal feedback to their oral English.Especially those students whose oral English is poor need more encouragement and guidance from their teachers.Through these findings,the author proves that teachers' interaction with students in English class and the use of their positive verbal feedback greatly contribute to students' motivation to speak English.While teachers' negative verbal feedback will hurt and weaken students' confidence and motivation to speak English.Therefore,based on the research of this topic,the author hopes that the research of the use of teachers' verbal feedback in current English class in China can attract more educators' attention.Ultimately,English teachers can give more proper and effective verbal feedback to students' oral English to strengthen students' motivation and their ability of oral English in senior high school.
