In today’s multicultural era,the social environment is becoming more and mo re diverse and rich.We need more and more contacts with people from different parts of the world who accept different cultures and education, have different reli gious beliefs and have personalized sexual orientation. The relationship between di fferent groups has become a meaningful research direction in the new era.The pu rpose of this study is to explore whether counterstereotype intervention play a po sitive role in improving intergroup relationships and decreasing tendencies to dehu manize outgroups. At the same time,we consider the influence of cognitive flexib ility.Counterstereotype strongly challenges the original stereotype, which seems to be closely related to the improvement of the level of cognitive flexibility.Based on previous studies, this study proposes an intermediary model of counterstereoty pe that influences the dehumanization on outgroups, that is,cognitive flexibility pl ays a mediating role in the effect of counterstereotype on reducing the dehumaniz ation on outgroups. In order to investigate the relationship among cunterstereotype, cognitive flexi bility and dehumanization on outgroups, this study takes college students as subje cts.Two studies have been carried out in the way of experiment to explore the i nfluence and mechanism of the counterstereotype on dehumanizing outgroups. In t he study 1,in the context of China test stereotype is the default mode of thinkin g and cognition and natural first start schema, which is independent of gender.Th en verifying the counterstereotype intervention measures can effectively start the c ounterstereotype schema. In a follow-up study, the second study,on the basis of t he preliminary study, using counterstereotype intervention measures to start the co unterstereotype schema, and then explore the relacognitive flexibility and dehumanization on outgroups. To explore whether the co tionships among counterstereotype, unterstereotype have direct effects on dehumanization towards outgroups as well a s indirect effects via cognitive flexibility. In the Study 1,there is a two factors design between starting type(counterst ereotype group, stereotype group, blank group)and gender(male and female),whic h are independent variables. The dependent variables were the degree of counterst ereotype. The purpose of the experiment is to set up counterstereotype, stereotype and blank group to control independent variable. The results show that stereotype is the default mode of social perception, and it has nothing to do with gender.Counterstereotype intervention can effectively activate the counterstereotypic schem a.This has laid the foundation for the follow-up study. In the study 2,the independent variable is the starting type(counterstereotype and stereotype)and the dependent variable is counterstereotyped degree, cognitive flexibility, and the dehumanization on outgroup. The purpose of the experiment is to initiate counterstereotype or stereotype for different groups of subjects and te st the difference in cognitive flexibility and dehumanization on outgroups. In addit ion,we try to explore the relationship between counterstereotype and ehumanizatio n on outgroups, the relationship between counterstereotype and cognitive flexibility, and the role of cognitive flexibility in counterstereotype and dehumanization on outgroups. The results of the study showed that counterstereotype can effectively r educe the tendency to dehumanize outgroups;counterstereotype can improve the c ognitive flexibility;cognitive flexibility plays a mediating role in the relationship between counterstereotype and dehumanization on outgroups.Counterstereotype ha ve direct effects on dehumanization towards outgroups as well as indirect effects via cognitive flexibility. The main conclusions of this study are:(1)Stereotype is the default mode of social perception, and it has nothing to do with gender.(2)Counterstereotype intervention can effectively activate the counterstereotypi c schema.(3)Counterstereotype can effectively reduce the tendency to dehumanize outgr oups.(4)Counterstereotype can improve the cognitive flexibility.(5)Cognitive flexibility plays a mediating role in the relationship between co unterstereotype and dehumanization on outgroups.Counterstereotype have direct eff ects on dehumanization towards outgroups as well as indirect effects via cognitive flexibility.
