Meta-dehumanization refers to the perception that individuals or in-group members feel that they are dehumanized by others or out-group members.Meta-dehumanization is the product of the development of dehumanization to a certain extent.Researchers combined meta-perception and dehumanization to confirm the existence of meta-humanization,and believe that metahumanization is more negative than meta-prejudice and meta-stereotype,and the negative impact of dehumanization on intergroup attitudes and behaviors;it is necessarily to strengthen metadehumanization research further. However, the current empirical research on the metadehumanization is based on different ethnic and religious beliefs, and the research results cannot fully explain the universal applicability of meta-dehumanization.And the researches only pay attention to outgroup blatant dehumanization in the context of violent conflict and the in-group blatant meta-dehumanization and it is suggested that the perception of the in-group blatant dehumanization will form outgroup blatant meta-dehumanization and cause aggressive attitudes and behaviors to outgroup members. One research explored the possible psychological mechanisms of dominant groups(such as Americans): social identity threats, desires for reciprocity and blatant dehumanization.Subsequently, the path of blatant meta-dehumanization ——blatant dehumanization——aggressive behavior was confirmed in the disadvantaged group. However, outgroup subtle dehumanization and in-group subtle meta-dehumanization formed in the general context is not explored. In nowadays, the phenomenon of subtle form of dehumanization is more common than the blatant dehumanization. In addition, the existing research only explored the existence of blatant meta-humanization and its consequences and possible psychological mechanisms in the ethical conflicts, there is no research in the context of general non-racial conflicts.Because of aggressive behaviors originate from aggressive tendencies, individuals with high aggressive tendencies tend to be more aggressive than low aggressive individuals, and most Chinese scholars also focus on aggressive tendencies. There is more widespread use of aggressive tendencies in Chinese cultural environments. The article chooses medical stuff and patients who have conflicts recently in China in recent years, and aims to explore the impact of meta-humanization on the aggressive tendency. The article conducts six studies to explore whether meta-humanization is formed when they are dehumanized(respectively subtle dehumanization and blatant dehumanization).Whether meta-humanization has formed aggressive tendency and the psychological mechanism of metahumanization affecting aggressive tendency.Study 1a explored whether patients who have been subjected to subtle dehumanization by medical staff have formed subtle meta-dehumanization.By presenting the less human vocabularies of evaluation by medical staff on patients, the results demonstrate: patients formed a subtle meta-dehumanization perception when being dehumanized by medical staff.Study 1b also explores the meta-perception when being blatantly dehumanized.Through the ascent of man scale, the medical staff's blatantly degrading score of patients' humanity is shown. The result is: when being blatantly dehumanized, the patient developed a blatant meta-dehumanization perception. On this basis, the effect of meta-dehumanization on the aggressive tendency was explored.Through the extrinsic affective Simon task paradigm, the results of Study 2a showed that patients with subtle meta-humanization showed more aggressively than patients with meta-humanization(meta-humanization: feeling that they are humanized). The results of Study 2b showed that patients with blatant meta-dehumanization perceptions showed more aggressive tendency than patients with meta-humanization perceptions.Based on Study 2a and 2b,Study 3 attempts to explore whether social identity threats, desires for reciprocity, and dehumanization factors could mediate the effect on meta-dehumanization on aggressive tendency in Chinese doctor-patient groups. The mediators are vital psychological mechanisms which is applicable to the path in the different ethnic groups. The result of study 3a showed that the above three factors cannot be used as psychological mechanism that affects the aggressive tendency. This may be because the blatant psychological mechanisms are not applicable to the subtle metadehumanization. The results of Study 3b showed that social identity threats, desires for reciprocity and dehumanization cannot also be the psychological mechanisms of the blatant metadehumanization that leads to the aggressive tendency. This factor is not repeatable for the effect of meta-dehumanization on aggressive tendency.Studies have shown that the meta-dehumanization perception formed when being subjected to dehumanizing treatment which is likely to cause aggressive tendency to the perpetrator. The psychological mechanism of this path needs to be further explored.
