A Study On The Relationship Between Paintings And Lawrence's Novels

Lawrence is one of the most individualistic of the modernist writers.He focused on human instinct,intuition,and created a modernist novel combining psychological exploration with social criticism.The formation of Lawrence's unique literary style is directly related to the author's painting experience.Therefore,this paper takes the relationship between painting and Lawrence's novel as the object of study,and explores the influence of painting on Lawrence's novels with the method of interdisciplinary research in comparative literature.We dig the influence painting on Lawrence's novels from the aspects of the content,theme,style with the method of close reading.We try to reveal the deep connection between the painting factors of different genres and literary language and style and provide a new method for the study of Lawrence's literary works.This paper consists of four parts:The first part is the first chapter of the paper,this part discusses the similarities of Lawrence's paintings and his novels on the content and theme,which is mainly manifested in two aspects:one is the same content.We can found the same scene in Lawrence's novels and his paintings.The other one is the same themes,like "the eternal body ","sexual harmony" and "harmony with nature".This reflects the most direct relationship between paintings and Lawrence's novels.The second part is the second and third chapter of the paper,which mainly discusses the influence of painting factors on the technique of Lawrence's novels.The second chapter mainly discusses the painting factors in the description of the environment:firstly,Lawrence uses the colors,light and composition of the traditional British landscape painting to depict the countryside scenery.Secondly,Lawrence use the techniques of light and shadow and contrasting colors to depict the difference between country and city.The third is the use of expressionism to depict the environment with subjective emotions.The third chapter mainly discusses the painting factors in the characterization of the characters:first,it uses the symbolic meaning of color to depict the characters.Second,Lawrence use the expressionistic painting techniques to depict the irrational psychology of the characters,showing the "blood" nature of characters.The third part is the fourth chapter of the paper,which explores the influence of painting on the style of Lawrence's novels.The use of different skills from various painting schools promotes the Lawrence's novels change from realism to modernism from the diachronic perspective.And from the synchronic perspective,it contributes Lawrence to formed his own unique literary style in modern novelist.Lawrence's psychological novels different from the stream-of-consciousness novels at the same period.In the novel,the exquisite capture of subjective consciousness and the accurate description of the objective environment are interwoven with each other,which makes his novels shine in the literary world.The conclusion analyze the reasons why the Lawrence's novels are influenced by the paintings from the aspects of objective conditions and subjective reasons and explain the significance and value from the angle of painting.
