As Chinese international position increased,China is being paid more attention to by the world, including economic strength and soft power of Chinese culture.Chinese literature is a carrier of soft power of Chinese culture, and it does attract the eyes of foreigners.Chinese literary works “going out” has become an inevitable trend thanks to the frequent translation activities.Prose(modern prose),enjoying the same statue with poetry, fiction and drama, plays an important role in spreading Chinese literature and thought. Therefore,it is of great significance to study the prose translation.Up to now, studies on prose translations have long been lagged behind in comparison with researches on translation of fiction, poetry in China.Besides, many studies on this topic are mainly confined to the aspects of essays beauty, style and image, but little attention is drawn on the context culture. It is important to take context culture into consideration in prose translations for the reason that it finally concerns whether the target text conveys the correct information, writers' intention and arouses the same feelings with source readers.According to that, the American anthropologist Hall(1976)has classified context into high context culture and low context culture from the perspective of culture.Different HC and LC cultures rely on context in varying degree in the process of conveying information, which results in different uses in languages. When communicating, people in high context cultures tend to depend more on context than language itself to convey information while people in low context cultures like to rely more on language than context.Prose,as an important Chinese literature,is the typical product of high context culture featuring with free style, loose sentence, concise, comprehensive and strong intertextuality. The author's intention and emotion are implied between the lines, which need to be felt by the readers according to the context. Therefore, the high-low contextual theory is of great significance to guide modern Chinese prose translation. On the basis of Hall's theory of high-low context culture, with Selected Modern Chinese Essays(1)as an example, this thesis attempts to make comparative analysis on the differences between target and source languages from lexical, sentence and textual level in C-E prose translation, hoping to provide significant reference for further prose translation by summarizing the translation methods. This thesis is conducted from five chapters. The first chapter is introduction, generally introducing the background, significance of the study,as well as the organization of the thesis. The second chapter is literature review. It systematically reviews the previous studies of Hall's high-low context culture both in theory and application from abroad and home.In addition, the previous studies on C-E prose translation will also be provided. The third chapter is theoretic framework,in which the general preview of high-low context culture is given in detail. The fourth chapter is the main body of the thesis. It is to comparative analyze the differences between target and source languages at lexical, sentence and textual level respectively in C-E prose translation on the basis of Hall's theory, and to conclude the translation methods for further modern Chinese prose translation. The last part comes to the conclusion of the thesis,in which the main findings and limitations of the thesis are summarized.
