| "Any text is a mixture of quotations,and any text is the absorption and transformation of another,"which is regarded as "intertextuality".Intertextuality,a term first put forward by the French semiotician Kristeva in the 1960s,refers to the fact that a text contains other people's words or other texts' fragments.Intertextuality is a distinguishing feature of news reports because in addition to reporting events and reality in the word,news reporters rely primarily on other people's accounts of events in their news reports.In the form of reported speech,news reports are filled with a number of others,voices.This fundamental principle of news fact can be stated like this:"something is so because someone says it".The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has attracted the whole world's great attention since 2013 and the term "AIIB" has been preferred by the numerous domestic and foreign media.This study attempts to analyze English news reports from Chinese newspapers and American newspapers about AIIB in terms of reporting modes,reporting verbs and news sources.An intertextual analysis of the reported speech is conducted to explore how language and discourse reveal various ideologies.Ten English news reports about AIIB from People's Daily and China Daily as well as ten from The New York Times and The Washington Post are selected in this thesis.The 20 samples are issue-oriented,meaning that they are the reports on the same event at the close period but from different sources and cover the 10 chronological stages in the history of AIIB.Employing both synchronic and diachronic studies,both qualitative and quantitative approaches,this study aims to address three main questions:1.What are the patterns of intertextuality in the Chinese and American news discourses on AIIB?2.What are the similarities and differences of intertextuality in the Chinese and American news discourses on AIIB?3.What are the functions of intertextuality in the Chinese and American news discourses on AIIB?Through the data analysis,we find that:In terms of reporting modes,both the Chinese and American newspapers use indirect speech most frequently and direct speech second.There is a huge difference in the usage of mixed speech between them.In terms of reporting verbs,both newspapers use neutral reporting verbs most frequently and mental reporting verbs least.Chinese newspapers and American newspapers employ different speech act reporting verbs to convey different ideological thoughts.In terms of news sources,both newspapers adopt specified sources most frequently and unspecifiable sources least.The proportion of specified sources in Chinese newspapers is similar to that in American newspapers,but the hidden ideologies are totally different.For China,he spares no effort to shape a positive image of A?B and emphasizes that rather than being a competitor,the new bank will complement the current international economic order and enable China to take more global responsibility.For the world's biggest developed country America,his attitude towards the AIIB experienced two stages.At first,he opposed the new China-led bank strongly and put pressure on his allies not to participate.Later,as more and more allies announced their plans to join one by one for the sake of domestic interests,America eased its opposition slightly and said that he would encourage the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to cooperate with the new institution.On the whole,this thesis confirms that language and discourse are products of values,beliefs and ideologies.News reports,the seemingly objective and impartial tool to spread information,are in fact ideology-loaded.Therefore,when reading news,readers should promote their critical sensibility and awareness so as to strengthen the anti-control awareness of public discourses. |
