Based on the actual cases of the ninth and tenth chapters of Climate Change and the Health of Nations:Famines,Fevers, and the Fate of Populations and guided by the Theory of Translation Norms of Gideon Toury, this report will analyze the difficulties met during translation and summarize the translation strategies and methods. This report consists of five parts.Chapter one elaborates the background and the actual significance of this translation program.Chapter two has a detailed analysis of the translation text through the description of the text contents and characteristics.Chapter three is mainly about the whole translation process which includes the preparation before translation, the translation course and the review after the translation. In preparation phase, the author introduces translation norms in applied in this report by analyzing the research status of the scientific translation. And thenThe writer decides the tendency of the translation version with the guidance of initial norms and preliminary norms in the translation course.Chapter four is the crucial part of this program. With the combination of the guidance of the operational norms and the characteristics of scientific texts, the constraints of target language and culture norms in the selection of translation strategies was realized. Therefore, detailed analysis of difficulties is demonstrated from the two aspects of operational norms which include the textual-linguistic norms embracing the word and sentences and matricial norms referring to sections and chapters. The translation of the terms is the main difficult point when it comes to the words' part, while the focus of the sentences is the logical analysis of the difficult long sentences and the handling of the translationese in the scientific text.In terms of the sections and chapters, the writer analyzes the text coherence from three aspects which are the omission and transformation of the function words and the translation from subject-prominent to the topic-prominent,as well as the selection of the type of the target-language.In the last chapter, the writer reviews the whole translation process, and then sums up the gains and the deficiencies during the translation practices. The significance of this translation program can be summed up as three points. In the first place, this text is selected from an unusual work of an Australia specialist who is specialized in climate change for decades. Therefore, the writer expects to offer some material support to the Chinese scholars of related fields by translating the text.Secondly, the writer hopes that the translation of some comprehensive climate-related research work can expand the volume and kinds of scientific and technical text.Last but not least, the combination of Theory of Translation Norms of Gideon Toury with scientific and technical text will provide a new theory guidance for the scientific and technical translators from the perspective of the application of translation theory.
