Zhang Yousong(1903-1995)is a well-known translator in China, who was once as famous as Cao Jinghua,Fu Lei and Ru Long in the 1950 s.He published many excellent translation works, including Immensee,Mark Twain's Short Stories and so on,and made a significant contribution to the translation and introduction of foreign literature, especially of Mark Twain's works,in China. However,he is rarely known by people because of the special time he lived in and his unfortunate experiences, and there is only a little literature on him or his translation works. The author has only found 11 articles on CNKI and only one is about Zhang's translation of Mark Twain's short stories. Therefore, the author thinks that it is necessary to make a relatively comprehensive and deep analysis on Zhang Yousong and his translation of Mark Twain's novelettes, aiming to let more people have a better understanding of Zhang Yousong and his translation works, and to emphasize the significant and profound influence of his translation activities on translated literature. The existing literature has already made comparative studies on Zhang Yousong's translation works from different perspectives such as the three-character theory:Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance, the Skopos Theory, the Reception Aesthetics Theory, and the Descriptive Theory. This thesis adopts Zhou Lingshun's Translator Behavior Criticism,Chesterman's Translation Ethics, and Descriptive Translation Studies, aiming to more comprehensively analyze and evaluate Zhang's translation activities, thoughts, and works from multiple theories and perspectives. The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is introduction, including the study purpose, the study significance and the literature review, and the research content and thesis structure.Chapter Two makesa relatively comprehensive description and evaluation of Zhang's translation activities from the perspective of Descriptive Translation Studies.Chapter Three makes a generalization of Zhang Yousong's translation thoughts from the viewpoint of Translation Ethics.Chapter Four is the main part of this thesis. It makes a relatively objective evaluation on and analysis of Zhang's 13 translations of Mark Twain's novelettes by comparing them with those of Ye Dongxin.Chapter Five makes a general conclusion of the whole thesis, and offers some suggestions on the future study of the thesis topic. After the collation and discussion of the present study, the author finds that Zhang's translation activities have their rationality in conforming to the social environment of his time.Besides, his translation thoughts are rich and comprehensive, and correspondent with Translation Ethics. What's more,Zhang's translation works are rational and effective, having a better quality and reading and collection value.
