| Previous studies have provided evidence for the activation of morpho-semantics during the processing of morphological complex words.However,prior research given rise to two opposing views between form-then-meaning and the form-with-meaning.This study consist of two experiments,The prime word presented for 47 ms in Experiment 1,and 200 ms in Experiment 2.In Experiment 1,we adopted a 2(Semantic transparency: transparent vs.opaque)× 2(Form related: related vs.unrelated)two factors whitin experimental design.When transparent words were targets,opaque words served as the form-related primes;similarly,for opaque targets,transparent words served as the form related primes.Behavioral results in Experiment 1 reveal that participants' responses were faster for transparent than for opaque targets and more accurate responses were committed for transparent targets.ERP results show that interaction between prime words type and target words type as reflected by the N250,and only opaque prime evoked a smaller negativity(N250)as compared with unrelated control prime when transparent served as target.In addition,the waveform was more negative(N400)going in the form unrelated condition than the form related condition.In Experiment 2,we adopted a 2(Semantic transparency: transparent vs.opaque)× 2(Form related: related vs.unrelated)two factors whitin experimental design.When transparent words were targets,opaque words served as the form-related primes;similarly,for opaque targets,transparent words served as the form related primes.Behavioral results in Experiment 2 show that participants' responses were faster for transparent than for opaque targets and more accurate responses were committed for transparent targets.ERP results in Experiment 2 show that interaction between prime words type and target words type as reflected by the P200 and N400.Though opaque evoked a smaller positivity(P200)than unrelated control item when the target was transparent,unrelated control prime eliciting a more negativity(N400)as compared with transparent one.In conclusion,this pattern of results indicates that morpho-semantics could play an important role in the early stage of Chinese word recognition.In masked priming paradigm,both form and morpho-semantics facilitate the integration of target words.However,the activation of morph-semantics is weak.In unmasked priming paradigm,the effect of morpho-semantics facilitate the word recognition in early stage,while the activation effect is opposite at later stage of lexical processing. |
