Baoshan dialect is subordinate to the southwest sub-dialect of the northern dialect. It is a common language used by residents living in Baoshan and its surrounding areas and is similar to Mandarin--the common language for Han people.Nowadays, the works of Baoshan dialect are mostly concerned with the sound, rhyme and tone as well as a large collection of vocabulary and studies of special grammar, rarely or hardly involving study of modal particles. In this paper the investigation is only limited to the urban area and surrounding suburbs of Baoshan City.Through field investigation,a large amount of corpus is collected, aiming at objectively describing modal particles existing in Baoshan dialect and providing certain reference for subsequent researches on modal particles. This paper covers an in-depth research into the type, function, and diachronic transmutation of the modal particle of Baoshan dialect. The thesis is divided into five parts:Introduction part.the introduction part mainly describes the research status of Baoshan dialect and modal particles, and briefly presents the purpose, significance and methods of the research in this paper.Firstly, the first chapter mainly discusses the types of modal particles in Baoshan dialect. The scholars of Chinese grammar hold different views on the classification of modal particles.Based on the characteristics, modal particles of Baoshan dialect are divided into three categories: condition modal particles(7),modality modal particles(17)and interrogative particles(5).At the same time, the transmutation, realization mechanism and typology significance of these modal particles are discussed.Secondly, the second chapter respectively introduces the system of these modal particles in terms of phonetic features and syntactic structure, and emphatically introduces four modal particles that can be used as topic markers.Thirdly, the third chapter provides a detailed discussion about the pragmatic function of these modal particles from three aspects: semantic function(expression of information and doubt),sentence-completing function(freedom and cohesion),and textual function(pause and anaphor).Fourthly, the fourth chapter mainly involves the transmutation of several special modal particles from the aspects of their origin, formation and development. The transmutation is commonly featured by: they all grammaticalizate from content words, and retain trace of Ancient Chinese. Conclusion part. The conclusion mainly summarizes the full text, points out the shortcomings of the article and the problems to be studied in the future.
