The importance of vocabulary in English learning has been widely recognized.Vocabulary is also an important symbol to test the English level of primary students.Although teachers adopt a lot of methods to teach vocabulary,A large number of students are rather poor in word reading and spelling.Most of the students lose confidence and interest in English by the low vocabulary achievement.Some students are tired of English learning.As a new method of English teaching,phonics was introduced into our country's middle and primary school students' English teaching.However,studies on phonics are mostly focus on the relationship between phonics and students' word decoding and reading ability.And the subjects are mainly children whose mother tongue is English.but few of the studies pay attention on the students who study in rural primary and middle school.Therefore this research is fit to the students who are in primary school in rural areas.This research was under taken to test the effectiveness of phonics on English vocabulary teaching in primary school.The research questions are the following:1.Can the use of Phonics improve the students' ability of word reading and spelling?2.Can the use of Phonics improve the students' ability of word memory?3.Can the use of Phonics make the students become more interested in vocabulary learning?There were 114 students of Grade Six involved in the experiment.Before the experiment,58 students were required to fill the pie-questionnaire to learn the students' interests in English learning and the problems existed in English learning.Four tests about PA,word reading,word spelling and memorizing were recorded.Two achievement test papers were used to check students' English learning development before and after the experiment.After the experiment,a post-questionnaire and an interview were conducted among the students in the experiment to find out if their interests toward English vocabulary learning have improved under phonics instruction.All the collected data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0.The results showed that after the experiment,the students in the experiment outperformed the ones in CG in word reading,spelling and memorizing skills.Besides,the students in experiment also make great progress in improving their interests and motivation in vocabulary learning.The majority of them do not think English difficult and dull any more.Thus,it is proved the effectiveness of phonics in students' vocabulary teaching in primary.
