Phonics approach is based on the pronunciation of 26 English letters, establishes a correspondence between English letters or letter combinations and phonetic. It emphasizes the connection between pronunciation and spelling of vocabulary,to achieve the learning effect that students can read words that they see and write the words that they hear. The most distinctive feature of the phonics approach is that it connects the pronunciation of 26 English letters with Chinese Pinyin.Phonics approach in order to solve the problems of students pronunciation is difficult and pronunciation is not correct. This thesis explains how students can easily master the pronunciation of consonants in 26 letters by using Chinese Pinyin through positive transfer in language transfer theory, and how students can construct their understanding of the phonetic-morphological relationship of words after mastering a certain number of words through constructivism theory. The current teaching situation of this study is only based on the students of class 1 and class 2,grade 7 of the Kebokeyuzi Junior High School as an example. This study seeks answers to the following questions: 1.What is the influence of the phonics approach on students’ ability to pronounce words in English vocabulary teaching? 2.What is the influence of the phonics approach on students’ ability to spell words in English vocabulary teaching? In this experiment,Class 1,Grade 7 is the experimental class(40 students)and Class 2,Grade 7 is the controlled class(40 students).Research instruments include pronunciation test and spelling test.In the experiment, experimental class words are taught through phonics approach, and controlled class teaches words through the international phonetic alphabet. Two classes are both taught by the author. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks. Before the experiment, students in two classes were asked to take two pretests, the goal of which was to make sure their pronunciation and spelling were at the same level. After 12 weeks of vocabulary teaching, students in two classes were required to take a post-test.Finally,based on the results analysis and discussion of the data, the implications, limitations of the research and suggestions for future research are drawn.Through experimentation,we can draw two conclusions: 1.Phonics approach can improve students’ ability to pronounce words in English vocabulary teaching.2.Phonics approach can improve students’ ability to spell words in English vocabulary teaching.
