During the NPC and CPPCC sessions every year, the press conference held by foreign ministry has gained wide attention from the world.A wide range of information is involved and practical significance is embraced at the press conference.A large number of long sentences with much information appear whose structures are complex. Therefore, the interpreter is required to have a high level of professional quality so as to produce high-quality interpretation in a limited time.At the same time,it can be found that previous studies on interpreting strategies of long sentences do not go far enough by referring to previous materials. Therefore,it is valuable and meaningful to study the effective understanding and interpretation of long sentences further. This paper is a case study based on foreign minister Wang Yi’s speeches from 2016 to 2017 with the Relevance-Adaptation Model as the analysis tool to further discuss interpreting strategies of long sentences in the consecutive interpreting.Relevance-Adaptation Model concluded by Yang Ping is such a model that combines Relevance Theory and Adaptation Theory.Yang Ping holds the idea that the Relevance Theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson provides an internal mechanism for the interpreter to understand the language, while the Adaptation Theory proposed by Verschueren supplies a sound basis for the selection of the target language on the theoretical side. Therefore,it is better to combine these two together to learn from each other to provide guidance for interpretation practice. The author refers to previous studies on interpretation, finding that most of previous studies focus on either Relevance Theory or Adaptation Theory.Few scholars apply Relevance-Adaptation Model to interpretation study, especially studies on interpretation of long sentences. On the other hand,a lot of long sentences are involved in the process of consecutive interpreting.Furthermore, the Relevance-Adaptation Model takes the advantage of combining these two theories to process interpretation of long sentences. Therefore, under the guidance of Relevance-Adaptation Model, the thesis makes a research on interpreting long sentences in the consecutive interpreting so as to analyze some specific examples to provide four interpreting strategies including conversion, logical processing, inversion and interpreting strategies of long sentences with no subjects. What’s more,it can be further discovered that there exist some differences between long Chinese sentences and long English sentences, such as parataxis and hypotaxis, premodifiers and postmodifiers, subjectivity and objectivity.According to the study,it is shown that the Relevance-Adaptation Model provides practical guidance for interpreting long Chinese sentences and English sentences and supplies fresh theoretical blood for further study of interpreting long Chinese sentences and English sentences. What’s more, some defects also exist in the paper.Firstly, the materials collected in the thesis are probably far from comprehensive, imposing restrictions on the thesis to some extent.Secondly,Relevance-Adaptation Model is a new model,so it may be imperfect that the author fully understands related knowledge of this model and combines it with specific examples in the paper better.
