With the development of globalization, cultural exchanges between China and the West are now much more common. There are thus many vocative texts in translation works and there is a large target readership which has higher expectations in relation to the quality of the translated version. Therefore,it is necessary to further explore how to improve the various translating approaches used and develop new strategies for vocative text translation. The second and the third parts of Abundant Living on Low Income are taken as the translated material while version by the translator is used as the base material for this research project. This report mainly deals with the key and difficult aspects in the translated version utilizing the theory of translation variation proposed by Huang Zhonglian. The source text can be roughly classified as a vocative text according to Peter Newmark's Text Typology,as well as by referring to features of the source text. The term “variation” refers to any translation activities which subtract content to satisfy specific readers' needs taking into account their requirements. This can be achieved by applying various kinds of variation approaches, such as addition, omission, compiling, interpreting, compressing, merging and revising. The paper explores the classification and application of these approaches via the analysis of a number of translation cases. The purpose of adopting the seven approaches in this thesis is to improve the translation fluency and thus make the text more easily accepted by target language readers. This translation practice has enriched the translator's knowledge about relative translation theories and enhanced her translation proficiency. The translator also hopes that this report will provide some reference for translators of vocative text.
