Since the 1970 s,the related research of learning motivation has been a hot topic with less variety of research methods and from a narrower perspective.Hence,the study of learning motivation has made little evident progress.The L2 Motivational Self System put forward by Dornyei in 2005 includes three components: "ideal L2 self","ought-to L2 self" and "L2 learning experience".Empirical studies conducted by foreign scholars prove that L2 Motivational Self System is superior to other motivation theories in explaining students' English learning motivation changes.In 1990 s,some researchers studied the relationship between teachers' motivation and students' motivation,and called this phenomenon "motivational contagion".The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between "teachers' internal and external motivation" and "students' English Motivational Self System" respectively.In this study,the research subjects are six senior English teachers with different motivation levels and their students in six classes in a senior high school in Luzhou City,Sichuan Province,The teacher subjects were divided into two groups according to the different levels of their motivation.The student subjects were divided into two groups according to their corresponding teachers.Quantitative is the main research design,supplemented by the qualitative analysis,employing questionnaire and interview to collect data and information.After one semester,the situation of motivational contagion was determined through the comparison of the test results of the three components of the English Motivational Self System and the comprehensive analysis of the interviews.The results show that:(1)The higher the level of teachers' internal motivation is,the higher the levels of all the three components of students' English Motivational Self System are,among which the influence of teachers' internal motivation on the students' "ideal English self" and "English learning experience" is the most significant.(2)The higher the level of teachers' external motivation is,the higher the levels of all the three components of students' English Motivational Self System are,among which the influence of teachers' external motivation on the students' "English learning experience" is the most significant.There are two main deficiencies in this study: firstly,the sample capacity is insufficient.The universality and generalization of the research results need to be further studied and verified in the future.Secondly,due to the limitations of the research contents and research subjects,the feasibility of the questionnaires still has some space of improvement,and the design of the questionnaires is not comprehensive enough.There is still a lot to explore concerning research of motivational contagion between teachers and students.Therefore,the future research can focus on the systematic study of the two-way process of motivational contagion.
