It is vital to utilize linking words and to achieve discourse coherence in argumentation writing.The discourse deixis is the most commonly used means among students.However,there are not a lot of researchers who focused on the comprehensive research of discourse deixis.By using statistics and corpus,the author contrastively analyzed the use of discourse deixis in the spoken and written English corpora including Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners(WECLL)of SWECLL,as well as LOCNESS,which represents written production of native speakers.This thesis mainly focuses on the differences of discourse deixis in argumentation written by Chinese students and American students.In the research,100 pieces of argumentation were randomly extracted from WECCL and LOCNESS respectively,with an approximately equal number of words for each.Using the function of concordance in the corpus software PowerConc,the author extracted the discourse deictic expressions,and calculated the raw frequency of discourse deixis.Based on the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis,the research findings are as follows: First,in English argumentation writing,Chinese students tend to use fewer “Third Personal Pronoun Discourse”,“Demonstratives Discourse Deixis” “Directional Discourse Deixis”,“Meta-lingual Evaluative Discourse Adverbs” and “Topic Discourse Connectives”.Second,the frequency of personal discourse deixis used by Chinese students is higher than that for English native speakers.In addition,Chinese students overuse the first personal pronoun discourse deixis and second personal pronoun discourse deixis for instance,“We”,‘Us” “Our”,“ you” “your” etc.The reasons are due to Chinese students' poor discourse consciousness and stylistic awareness,cultural differences and influence of their first language.This paper hopes that English teachers can focus on teaching the functions of discourse deixis in their English teaching,and Chinese students can be aware of discourse coherence.
