"Form quality" and "character" are two important concepts in classical calligraphy. The analysis of handed down writings of Huang Daozhou, such as regular script in small characters, scrolls in running script, personal letters in running script and the like shows a distinctive and vivid expression in both “form quality” and “character “in the calligraphy of Huang Daozhou.Huang Daozhou lived in late Ming Dynasty – a period of historic changes ongoing. His emotional attitudes towards scholarship which is based on “filial piety” had a very profound influence on the style of calligraphy.Huang Daozhou integrated the intrinsic charm of calligraphy with his personality charm in the dual pursuit of Etiquette and beauty-appreciation.Huang Daozhou's influence over the later generations mainly occurred in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, which was featured as a group phenomenon centering on Shen Zengzhi,Pan Tianshou,Sha Menghai, and Lai Chusheng.Huang Daozhou's understanding of “form quality” and “character” are reflected in the following: first, dig the “form quality” of ancient calligraphy enough and explore its“character”,and thus have it for his own use;second, assimilate and transfer the ancient calligraphy to something new,and finally form a style of his own by standing on the shoulders of classical masters. In this special period-late Ming Dynasty,Huang Daozhou was an example of the perfect combination of personality and calligraphy taste.
